Treatment focuses on easing the sometimes-uncomfortable symptoms of menopause. Menopause itself is a natural condition that does not require treatment. Treatments may include:

Hormone Therapy – Estrogen therapy is the most effective treatment option for relieving menopause hot flashes. Dr. Miller may recommend the lowest dose of estrogen needed to give you symptom relief. Estrogen also helps prevent bone loss. Hormone therapy may also benefit your heart if you start within five years of your last period.

Vaginal Estrogen – Relieve vaginal dryness with estrogen applied directly using a vaginal cream, tablet or ring. This treatment can help relieve vaginal dryness, discomfort with intercourse and some urinary symptoms.

Antidepressants – Certain antidepressants related to the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may decrease menopause hot flashes. A low-dose antidepressant for hot flashes can help women who cannot take estrogen or those who need an antidepressant to treat a mood disorder.

Gabapentin (Neurontin) – Has been shown to reduce hot flashes. This drug may help women who can’t use estrogen therapy and women who have migraines.

Medications for Osteoporosis – Dr. Miller may recommend medication to prevent or treat osteoporosis (thinning of bones). Several medications can help reduce bone loss and risk of fractures.
